The Crawlspace

The Crawlspace portrait

The gap beneath the gallery floor is four inches high, and it is not empty. Something flat lives down there, pacing you board by board — you will never see more of it than what fits between the flagstones. It works on your stonework from underneath: at the start of each of your turns it slides a course out from under whatever you are raising, so your wall rises slower over a floor that is not solid. The cold never reaches under the floor: what comes up between the stones comes up whole. Only once it is wounded does the floor itself come open under you. Pressed into a gap that narrow, it heals as it waits.
