The Windlass

The Windlass portrait

The Galleries' patience made mechanism: a great silk-wound windlass braced across the corridor, its cables run through iron rings in every wall. Each turn it takes up another span of slack and the room is smaller by exactly that much — the pawl turns one way, and nothing it takes up is ever paid back. Its tarred cables spend your steel (each of your turns, your edge dulls) and the slack it steals comes off whatever wall you are raising. Rime does not hold on a running cable: the cold never slows the line. Wound past half, the pawl slips — and the whole gallery cinches shut at once.

Keywords on this page
💪 Wrath
Adds its value to every attack it makes. Lasts the whole fight.
🧱 Mortar-Creep
Whenever you gain Guard from a card, the foe gains that much Guard. Decays by 1. The mortar sets on both of you — turtling hardens the thing you are trying to kill.
🪨 Crush-Weight
Deals that much damage at the end of your turn, straight through Guard, and it NEVER fades. The weight only grows.
