The Underdraft
The stair has an underside, and the underside has weather. A cold column of air that lives in the drop and knows what balance is for: it takes yours first. It leans you out over the rail, drags your blade-arm wide, banks the dark air beneath you into something almost solid — and then stops holding you up. Whatever you have sealed away for later, the draft takes first: what leaves your hand above the drop goes over the rail, and it is simply gone. It does not brace itself - it gathers, and the next thing it does comes harder.
