The Unfooting

The Unfooting portrait

Not a shape in the dark; the dark already has one of those. The Unfooting is the stair itself gone wrong beneath you: steps leaning a degree out of true, scree hissing over the edge in a steady stream, the frame of the world tilting past what your inner ear will forgive. It is patient the way stone is patient. It takes your footing a finger's width at a time, opens your guard by tilting the very ground it stands on, masons its courses solid against your blade, and unbuilds whatever you have raised to steady yourself: what you build, the stair unbuilds. Then, once in every long slow round, a whole flight lets go. You will feel it loosen before it falls. Climb accordingly.
